Role Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases invites applications for a Service Chief of Clinical Microbiology. The Clinical Microbiology Service currently consists of the Service Chief, two clinical microbiology faculty, three supervisors, and more than 45 technologists, technicians, and clerical personnel, and supports the Memorial Hospital and MSK regional sites located in New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island.  The Department and the Clinical Microbiology Service is committed to applied and translational research through active collaborations with internal and external scientists, clinicians, and industry experts to develop innovative laboratory methods and leverage advances in technology to improve patient care. Our faculty play a vital role in clinical research and clinical trials.  MSK provides diverse educational opportunities to develop further the skills and ambition of our scientists, laboratory directors, laboratory managers, medical technologist, and technicians. The Clinical Microbiology Service offers a two-year Clinical Microbiology Fellowship providing training for doctoral-level scientists interested in acquiring knowledge and skills necessary to direct a clinical microbiology laboratory.

Extensive experience in high complexity clinical lab/director functions in support of an academic medical center clinical services and translational programs is preferred. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical: The position includes a clinical commitment to the Clinical Microbiology service at MSK. The service and its laboratories are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and offer comprehensive testing in bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibility, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, and infectious disease serology using both conventional methods and cutting-edge technologies such as real-time PCR, solid and liquid microarrays, nucleic acid sequencing, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The attending faculty members provide consultations on selection of diagnostic tests and interpretation of test results to all MSK clinical teams. The individual will be responsible for mentoring, directing, instructing, and supervising attendings, fellows, managers, supervisors, and technologists providing diagnostic service, advising, and consulting with clinical teams.

Research: Development of a creative and productive research program in relevant fields of interest leading to publication of results in high quality, peer-reviewed scientific journals is a fundamental requirement of the position. Emphasis is on test method development relevant to cancer care. The successful applicant will obtain extramural funding and direct collaborative research with clinical colleagues across the institution. It is expected to develop collaborations with clinical staff to study and improve biomarker detection and analysis in cancer patients. Subspecialty training in method development and emerging modern technologies in the field of microbiology is preferred.

Teaching: The candidate will be participating in the training of Clinical Microbiology and Lab Medicine fellows and clinical pathology residents through lectures, clinical supervision and mentorship as well teaching of laboratory technologists and supervisors.

Akron Children’s Hospital is a teaching hospital with an AGMCE accredited Hematology/Oncology fellowship training program and a medical school affiliation with Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Programs at the Akron Children’s Hospital Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders include hematology, oncology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, a state-funded sickle cell program and regional hemostasis and thrombosis center. Hematology/oncology care is provided at our hospital in Akron, our Beeghly campus in Boardman, Ohio, and three satellite clinics throughout the region. The Hematology/Oncology team is currently comprised of eleven faculty members, seventeen advanced practice providers and fellows.

Each year the center cares for approximately 90 new oncology patients, 15 stem cell/marrow transplant patients, 160 sickle cell patients and 540 bleeding disorder patients. The staff also provides care during 12,000 patient encounters annually. Akron Children’s Hospital is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, house a pediatric transplant center approved by the National Marrow Donor Program, and is one of only 9 pediatric cancer centers in the country verified by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a Pediatric Cancer Hospital.

The UNC Blood Research Center is a multidisciplinary research organization focused on basic, translational, clinical, and population-based investigation of benign hematologic disorders. The Center serves as the scientific home for benign hematology research across UNC and fosters collaboration from laboratory discovery through clinical implementation.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of scientific leadership, high-impact publications, and sustained extramural funding. Areas of interest include thrombosis and hemostasis, sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, hematopoiesis, iron metabolism, vascular biology, gene and cell therapies, and related blood disorders.

The Division of Hematology includes physician-scientists, clinical investigators, and basic scientists engaged in research spanning laboratory discovery through clinical investigation. The NHLBI clinical trials research programs in cardiovascular, pulmonary, blood diseases, and sleep disorders have grown substantially. These mission-critical research areas require a clinician-scientist with advanced expertise and experience in clinical research in outpatient, community, hospital, and/or critical care environments, including design and execution of different types of trials (early phase, efficacy, effectiveness, and implementation), risk management and mitigations, as well as experience in clinical care.

The CMRO will be responsible for providing oversight over extramural clinical studies and clinical trials in their respective Divisions, and will contribute to the development of NHLBI-wide clinical research policies and processes in collaboration with the NHLBI Office of Clinical Research. They will have institute-wide leadership responsibility as a member of the NHLBI's clinical trials Optimization and Coordination Team.  As a member of the Divisional leadership team, the CMRO contributes to the overall strategic direction of the clinical research portfolio.

The Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT provides care by a team of experts knowledgeable in the specialized medical evaluation and treatment of children with cancer and blood disorders in the Province of British Columbia and Yukon. The Director of Hematological Malignancies Translational Research will provide senior leadership for the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute’s precision oncology research mission in hematologic malignancies. This senior role is responsible for advancing a comprehensive translational research enterprise that seamlessly integrates genomic diagnostics, measurable residual disease (MRD) assessment, and biomarker-driven science with clinical care delivery and innovative clinical trial design across the leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and bone marrow transplant programs. 

The Director will establish and lead an independently funded research program, while serving as a key institutional representative in national and international collaborations. Working in close partnership with clinical and scientific leadership, the Director will play a central role in translating scientific discoveries into meaningful clinical impact. Equally important, the Director will foster a vibrant academic environment by recruiting, mentoring, and developing junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, and other trainees, building a strong and sustainable pipeline of future physician-scientists in translational malignant hematology research.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of independently funded translational research in hematologic malignancies, along with demonstrated leadership in multi-center clinical trial correlative science and national or international recognition. The ideal candidate will show a commitment to mentorship and a proven ability to lead collaborative, multi-institutional research efforts. Expertise in precision diagnostics, including MRD detection and genomic profiling—and experience leading large-scale translational programs or consortia are essential. The Division of Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation & Cellular Therapy (BMT & CT), University of Minnesota Medical School, is seeking an academic pediatric hematologist/oncologist with training and experience in blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy. The Division invites applications for an academic track position, with a focus in clinical care and research in non-malignant diseases at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

The ideal candidate will have translational clinical research experience and clinical expertise in the treatment and clinical research related to blood and marrow transplantation & cellular therapy for patients with hemoglobinopathies, inborn errors of immunity, and other non-malignant diseases, as well as independently obtained research funding. This position will help to further develop our BMT & CT Program’s basic/translational research programs to funnel new ideas from bench to bedside. This individual will also participate in the inpatient and outpatient clinical care of patients at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

The Hematology & Medical Oncology program in Manhattan spans inpatient care at Lenox Hill Hospital and outpatient care and infusion at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, both located in the highly sought-after Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.  In 2027, the outpatient program will move to the newly built, state-of-the-art Victoria and Lloyd Goldman Pavilion, a 15 story, 200,000 square foot facility located one block from Lenox Hill Hospital.  This new setting will offer boutique, patient-centered care with the latest in clinical, therapeutic and digital innovation.  The Cancer Institute in Manhattan has achieved several national accreditations and designations, including the Commission on Cancer from the American College of Surgeons, the NAPBC and NAPRC designations, and will be welcoming an exciting partnership with START JV, a world renowned incubator for early phase clinical trials, that will be opening a program onsite in the Goldman Pavilion.

Phoenix Children's Mission, Vision, & Values

The Division of Hematology and Oncology has established clinical expertise in the treatment of hematologic, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and breast malignancies and is committed to expanding programs across all oncologic subspecialties. Members of the Division collaborate closely with specialists across the Cancer Center including experts in surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, and radiation oncology to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care. The Cancer Center supports this collaborative approach through12 subspecialty multi-disciplinary tumor boards and maintains accreditation from several nationally recognized organizations including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.

Faculty are engaged in the MHMC internal medicine residency and hematology / oncology fellowship programs. The fellows cover the inpatient hematology and oncology consultation service for the MHMC hospital. The consult service expertise can also be requested by the separate inpatient cancer unit run by hospitalists.

Clinical research is an integral component of the Division and the MetroHealth Cancer Center. After holding the ECOG Cooperative Group grant at MetroHealth for 38 years, the Division and the Cancer Center are full partners (Lead Academic Participating Site) in the Case Western Reserve University National Clinical Trials Network grant. With the assistance of the MHMC oncology research team, all Division members are expected to enroll their patients in NCI, pharmaceutical-sponsored, and investigator-initiated studies.  The Division is closely aligned with the MHMC’s basic science driven Division of Cancer Biology and the Gene and Cellular Therapy Institute.

Specific Responsibilities  

• The Director will be a practicing member of the Hematology and Oncology Medicine Division, leading by providing outstanding clinical care and service to patients and referring providers, and promoting clinical trial enrollment.

• Establish a faculty development plan that identifies faculty sub-specialty interests, strengths and capabilities that can lead to successful program development and professional growth 

• Work on all aspects of faculty recruitment, and retention 

• Participate in the Department of Medicine’s leadership team ensuring attainment of the department’s goals and objectives

THE POSITION

The division is recruiting clinical researchers with a focus on contributing to a robust clinical trial portfolio supporting Wilmot Cancer Institute’s patient population and furthering scientific and clinical discovery.
