The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Joint Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the University Health Network (UHN) are seeking to recruit an Academic Hematologist (Hemoglobinopathies) for the Toronto General Hospital’s Blood Disorders Program and Red Blood Cell Disorders outpatient clinics. The successful candidate will have an academic position of Clinician Investigator, Clinician in Quality & Innovation or Clinician-Teacher, must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (or higher) at the University of Toronto.  The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025, or shortly thereafter.

The position is well suited to an early or mid-career physician with an interest in Sickle Cell, Thalassemia, other red cell disorders and complex iron overload. Strong collaborative skills are required to work in this multi-disciplinary clinic which is the largest of its kind in North America. The role will be primarily outpatient clinic based, though will also participate in the hematology consultation service. The candidate should have a strong academic interest in postgraduate MD teaching and also in alignment with their preferred academic job description. Additional qualifications in these domains are required.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the passion and vision to fulfill UHN’s mandate, fostering innovative and collaborative multi-disciplinary, multi-departmental and international educational and quality improvement initiatives. Applicants should have a strong passion for the medical care of multisystem diseases, racialized populations, health literacy, and pain management. The successful applicant will have a proven ability to work independently, as well as interacting with a multidisciplinary team in the management of patients with hemoglobinopathies.  There is an option for virtual or in-person clinics and training, and support will be provided.

The successful applicant must hold an MD degree, have, or be eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada in Hematology or Internal Medicine (or equivalent), and have, or be eligible for independent practice licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.  The successful applicant must also hold a valid OHIP billing number, and obtain and maintain privileges at University Health Network and Sinai Health System.  Salary and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.  A highly attractive remuneration package is available.

The Red Blood Cell Disorders clinic is North America’s largest comprehensive adult sickle cell and thalassemia clinic. It provides holistic care within a multidisciplinary team comprising nurse practitioners, social worker, and transition navigator.
